May 19, 2017

Padhraic Smyth, computer science professor and director of the UCI Data Science Initiative, was recently named as one of “20 Data Science Professors To Know” by Online Engineering Programs, an online information site that addresses educational questions and provides career content for engineering and computer science professionals. The 20 data science professors selected were chosen according to their employment at a respected university, doctoral degree, contributions to impactful publications and commitment to organizations and causes outside of their academic institution.

Smyth’s research specializes in artificial intelligence, machine learning databases and data mining. He was noted for his previous paper on “Content Coding of Psychotherapy Transcripts Using Labeled Topic Models” in the IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics (2015) and for his teaching of projects in AI, probabilistic learning and data science.
